The yard areas was used as an exercise area and garden. Notice the various courts and horseshoe pits. Joggers would run along the west wall.

During World War I, Conley trained a unit of inmates in the yard in preparation for combat. The War Department rejected Conley's offer of assistance.

During World War II, a Victory Garden was planted in the yard.
