When The Movies Came To The Old Montana Prison
What do the films ‘Fast Walking’, ‘Diggstown’, ‘The Last Ride’ and ‘Loves Comes to the Executioner’ have in common?
All were partly filmed behind the walls of the Old Montana Prison.
The 1982 film ‘Fast Walking‘ starred James Wood as a dope-smoking Prison Guard called ‘Fast-Walking’ Miniver. Written, directed and produced by James B. Harris, this drama focuses on the guards, not the prisoners.
‘Diggstown‘, released in 1992, once again starred James Wood, this time as a man just released from prison. It also starred Louis Gossett Jr. as a boxer managed by Woods.
Cameras returned to the old MSP in 1994 for ‘The Last Ride‘ (also known as F.T.W). Starring Mickey Rourke as Frank T. Wells, a rodeo rider just released from prison who falls for a disturbed young woman, played by Lori Singer.

In 2003, ‘Love Comes To The Executioner‘ filmed in the prison cells. Written and directed by Kyle Bergersen, it stars Jonathan Tucker as a man who takes the job as executioner at the same prison where his brother is on Death Row.
Many more movies, TV shows, ads and photoshoots have taken part in the surrounding towns and countryside. To see a complete list of films shot in Montana, head on over to the Montana Film Office at http://www.montanafilm.com/

Montana Acadamy of Living History
By admin | September 5, 2008
Register NOW for Workshops and Historic Talks
Next week sees the start of our annual Academy of Living History. Running from September 8th to 12th, the Montana Academy of Living History is dedicated to the understanding and preservation of how people lived and worked during the draft horse period of 1860s to 1930s.
The Academy provides hands-on learning opportunities as well as public seminars and programs on subjects ranging from driving and working horses in harness, historic clothing construction, wagon and buggy building and repairs, wheel setting, quilting, Dutch oven cooking and more. Evening programs include discussions of training draft horses, talks on historic trails, and presentations on early family histories.
It is no accident that historic Deer Lodge is the campus for the Academy. Living history workshops and presentations are at the Old Prison Museums and on the 1860s Grant Kohrs Ranch. Both of these venues, as well as many buildings along Main Street, are from the Draft Horse Era.
Academy activities are the week before the Big Sky Draft Horse Expo. Expo, and the unique Quilt and Carriage display provides additional learning experiences where teamsters and spectators see draft horses and mules working as they did in the past.
We hope you will attend our workshops and evening programs. Please read our catalog for information using the link below, or call (406) 846-1244 or (406)560-3586 for more info or to register.

1886 Benz Motorwagen Replica now on display
By admin | August 15, 2008
See the Worlds first automobile at the
Montana Auto Museum
Now on display in the Visitors Center, this replica of the 1886 Benz Motorwagen is a working model recreated for the 100th Anniversary of the Daimler Benz Motor Company in 1989. Constructed from the original 1886 schematics, this vehicle is widely regarded as the first automobile, a vehicle designed to be propelled by a motor.
The original Benz Patent Motorwagen was a three wheeled vehicle with a rear-mounted engine. It was constructed of steel tubing with wooden panels, steel-spoked wheels and solid rubber tires. Steering is by way of a toothed rack that pivots the unsprung front wheel. Fully-elliptic springs are used at the back along with a live axle and drive chain on both sides. A simple belt system serves as a single-speed transmission, varying torque between an open disc and drive disc. The first Motorwagen used the Benz 954 cc single-cylinder four stroke engine which produced ⅔ hp (½ kW) at 250 rpm. It was an extremely light engine for its time, weighing about 220 lb. It has an open crankcase and drip oiling system, and uses a pushrod-operated poppet valve for the exhaust. The single-cylinder engine’s power output is stabilized by a large horizontal flywheel. The power and engine speed is regulated by an evaporative carburettor controlled by a sleeve valve.

ALL’S WELL THAT ENDS WELL
One of the Bard’s least-produced plays, it is an exemplary counterpoint to Macbeth, one of Shakespeare’s most well-known plays.
Largely lumped into a group of plays that scholars call the “problem plays,” the problem is not with the dialogue; the problem is that the play does not fall into any neat and tidy category. All’s Well, for example,
has elements of romance and elements of comedy, but it’s neither. It has plenty of drama, but it’s not completely a serious play. It has elements of Shakespeare’s historic and tragic plays. There’s even a bit of sex farce. We don’t know what to call it. That’s the problem – but only for file clerks.
Bertram, a young braggart soldier who dreams of military greatness and who places social station above virtually everything else, sets off to serve the King of France. Simply put: he’s a snob. Beautiful Helena, a young woman who serves Bertram’s mother has fallen passionately in love with Bertram. Secretly, she follows him to Paris.
A dying king is miraculously cured by Helena, whose father was a famous physician. Overjoyed at being alive, the king allows Helena to choose anyone in the kingdom to marry and, of all people, she chooses the truculent Bertram. He is forced to consent to the marriage but decides that he would rather die in battle than stay married to Helena and so flees to Florence to fight in the Italian wars.
Playing out from that point in typical Shakespearean fashion – boy hates girl, girl is determined to get boy, boy is played for a fool, girl triumphs in the end – we’re derailed along the way with some of the Bard’s greatest comic writing in a witty, wry story that, in the end, turns out to have been a fairy tale all along.
All’s Well That Ends Well will be directed by MSIP Artistic Director JOEL JAHNKE.
