History and Horses in Deer Lodge

Montana Academy of Living History
Wednesday 16th September marks the start of this annual event, which is dedicated to the understanding and preservation of how people lived and worked during the draft horse period of the 1860s to 1930s.
Events are held at the Grant-Kohrs Ranch and the Pen Convention Center in Deer Lodge.

Big Sky Draft Horse Expo
On the 19th and 20th September, the 14th Annual Big Sky Draft Horse Expo is being held at the Tri-County Fairgrounds in Deer Lodge. This event provides a variety of viewing and driving competitions such as:

| > | Four horse Hitch and Driving and Four Abreast |
| > | Junior and Senior Team Driving |
| > | Ladies, Pleasure and Junior Cart |
| > | Tandem and Unicorn |
| > | Antique/Unique and Street/Working |
| > | Working teamster classes including obstacle course, log skidding, and cultivating |
| > | Feed team race |
| > | Kids stick horse race and more |

SHOW TICKETS
The Big Sky Draft Horse Expo provides a great educational and entertainment value. (Admission is free for children 10 and under). There are two choices for admission, day tickets or an event button.
The best value is to purchase the $15 Event Button.
The event button provides two days of horse show performances including the Quilt and Carriage Display and vendor trade show, plus:
- Free admission to all Deer Lodge museums from September 19-20, 2009
- Quilt and Carriage Show
- Discounts at some merchants
- Prize draw entry
- Expo Trade Show
Day tickets for the Big Sky Draft Horse Expo are $8 per day. Children under 10 are free.
BBQ AND HALL OF FAME RECEPTION
Saturday evening is the annual BBQ and Teamster Hall of Fame reception. Enjoy an outdoor chuck wagon barbecue and visit with teamsters from the Draft Horse Expo.
The events start at 6pm at the Fair Grounds in front of the Blue Ribbon Pavilion. Tickets are $9.00 for adults and $5 for children 6 – 12 (5 and under are free). Bring chairs and be prepared for a cool evening.
So bring the family to Deer Lodge this week and enjoy a piece of Montana History.
